Trump's Sanctions on Russia's Allies: India's Response and the Global Impact (2025)

Is Trump’s Plan to Sanction Russia’s Trading Partners Fair or Foolish?

As the devastating war in Ukraine drags on, U.S. President Donald Trump has thrown a controversial idea into the ring: he’s now open to backing a bill that would slap sanctions on countries trading with Russia. But here’s where it gets controversial—India, one of America’s key allies, is squarely on that list. Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump revealed that his party is pushing legislation to make it incredibly difficult for any nation to do business with Moscow. According to him, Russia’s trading partners, especially those buying its energy, are essentially fueling the war machine. “The Republicans are putting forward legislation with very tough sanctions on any country doing business with Russia,” Trump stated before departing Florida.

This isn’t just about India; China is also in the crosshairs. Both nations have faced intense scrutiny from Trump, who has labeled them as “primary funders” of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. While China has so far escaped penalties despite threats, India hasn’t been as lucky. Trump imposed a 25% “penalty” tariff on Indian goods in August, doubling the total tariffs to a staggering 50%, citing India’s role in “fuelling the war in Ukraine.”

And this is the part most people miss—Trump isn’t stopping there. He’s hinted at adding Iran to the sanctions list, further expanding the scope of this aggressive policy. But amidst all this, he’s also removed tariffs on over 20 food products, including beef, in response to rising grocery prices. This move offers some relief to Indian exporters of tea, coffee, spices, and cashew nuts, who were hit hard by the earlier tariff hikes, unlike their counterparts in the EU and Vietnam.

Meanwhile, India and Russia are doubling down on their trade relationship. On Sunday, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a $100 billion bilateral trade target by 2030 and discussed the next steps for the India-Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) free trade agreement. “The discussions focused on diversification, strengthening resilient supply chains, ensuring regulatory predictability, and promoting balanced growth,” stated the Indian commerce ministry, as reported by HT.

So, what would this bill actually mean? According to Bloomberg, if passed, it would allow Trump to impose tariffs of up to 500% on imports from countries buying Russian energy products and not supporting Ukraine. Is this a bold move to pressure Russia into peace, or is it an overreach that could strain global alliances?

Earlier, Trump was hesitant to support such a bill, as he engaged in peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, aiming for a ceasefire in Ukraine. But with those talks failing, he’s now turning to this drastic measure to force Russia’s hand. Is this the right approach, or could it backfire?

What do you think? Is Trump’s strategy fair, or is it a risky gamble? Let us know in the comments below!
